Awareness & Acceptance with ADHD Coach Sherri Crowley
On this episode, Jayme interviewed Sherri Crowley and her work as an executive and entrepreneurial women's ADHD coach. Sherri shared her personal journey of discovering her ADHD and how it led her to become an ADHD coach. She emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and honesty in managing ADHD, rather than relying solely on time management tools. Sherri also discussed her transition from being a generalist therapist to specializing in ADHD coaching, finding it more fulfilling.
Nature vs Nurture in ADHD
Jayme and Sherri discussed the nature versus nurture debate, specifically in relation to ADHD. Jayme expressed interest in understanding how much of ADHD is genetic and how much is influenced by the environment. Sherri, who believes in reading research on all sides of an issue, agreed that it is a combination of both. She mentioned Dr. Gabor Mate's theory that ADHD is a result of the brain's attempt to distract itself from a rough environment, and that epigenetics play a role in gene expression based on the environment. Both agreed that it is not an all-or-nothing situation, and that the environment can influence the expression of genes.
Hormones, ADHD, and Holistic Management
Sherri and Jayme discussed the impact of hormones on ADHD symptoms, particularly during perimenopause and menopause.Sherri shared her personal experience of managing ADHD symptoms during stressful periods and how she has since healed. They also discussed the importance of addressing ADHD holistically, rather than solely through medication. Sherri emphasized her philosophy of trying behavioral changes first and only considering medication if necessary. They agreed on the need for more awareness about the impact of hormones on ADHD symptoms and the importance of setting boundaries for effective time management.
Time Management and Family Balance
Jayme and Sherri discussed the importance of time management and organization in their lives. Sherri emphasized the need for setting boundaries and saying "no" to commitments that can overwhelm a person. They also talked about the challenges of balancing work and family life, with Sherri suggesting that parents should let their children do more for themselves to improve time management. Jayme shared her homeschooling approach, which involves hands-on learning and minimal screen time. Both agreed on the need for mindfulness and self-care in managing their busy lives. Jayme and Sherri discussed the challenges of being an entrepreneur and running a business.
