An Invention with Mulitple Missions w/ Alice Stone
Alice Stone's Invention Journey Begins
Jayme and Alice had a lively conversation about Alice's invention, Sipify, and its impact on people's lives. Alice Stone, a documentary filmmaker turned entrepreneur, shares how her career led to an invention. Alice discussed her invention, the Sipify, a reusable straw designed for hot beverages. She explains that as a filmmaker, she developed a beaming smile to put her subjects at ease while filming in their personal spaces. Her dentist, aware of how important her smile was as a professional tool, made a suggestion that sparked her invention journey.
Sipify Straw for Swallowing Difficulties
Alice discussed her invention, the Sipify, a straw that helps people with swallowing difficulties, such as those with Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis. She shared her experience of gifting the Sipify to patients and speech language pathologists, who found it helpful in controlling the flow of liquid and reducing the risk of aspiration. Alice also mentioned a clinical trial at Cleveland State University to further test the Sipify's effectiveness.
Scaling Sipify for Dysphagia Patients
Jayme and Alice discussed Alice's innovative straw, Sipify, which was initially created to help her mother with dysphagia. Alice expressed her desire to scale up the product and make it available to millions of people, particularly in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. She also mentioned her plans to conduct a study in Cleveland to gather feedback and potentially create a new version of the straw, Sipify 2.0, specifically targeting dysphagia patients.
Alice's Entrepreneurial Journey and Challenges
In the meeting, Jayme and Alice discussed Alice's journey from being a filmmaker to an entrepreneur, with a focus on her creation of a straw that allows people to sip coffee without spilling. Alice shared her experiences, including the challenges of asking friends and family for investment and the difficulties of working with an industrial designer who pushed her in a direction she didn't want. Jayme emphasized the emotional and energetic ties of entrepreneurship, likening it to a self-healing journey. The conversation ended with Alice reflecting on the importance of sticking to her gut instincts in the face of challenges.
Women in Male-Dominated Fields
Jayme and Alice discussed their experiences as women in traditionally male-dominated fields, such as business and engineering. Jayme emphasized the importance of women supporting each other in these environments and shared her belief that women are new to these fields, having previously been in more nurturing roles. Alice shared her journey of developing a coffee straw, including her initial missteps and the challenges she faced in the prototype stage.
